Here We Grow Again |
|
|
|
Wednesday, 08 August 2007 |
From the President:Each year for the last 22 years, our group has grown and we continue to
grow as new boards are formed to conduct elections and as our duties
become more challenging and we add to our staffs either because our
communities have grown or simply because our duties have grown.
This growth is creating challenges for our Association as we try to
manage greater demands for our training. This year, the Marriott Hotel
filled up the day the notice of our meeting went out. We had several
overflow hotels and a great many people had to commute daily to attend
our conference.
When we look around the State of Georgia for a hotel and conference
center that can handle 500 people, what we find is that, outside of
Atlanta, there aren't any options.
So...we had to decide whether to move our conference to Atlanta or switch to a conference center and multiple hotels.
We decided that it would be better for our membership to switch to a conference center.
For our 23rd Annual Conference, we have reserved the Conference Center on Jekyll Island.
Our training has revolved around the duties of the election
superintendent for most of our history. But, we have 400+ members and
only 159 counties (and only a handful of municipalities). Many counties
are bringing staff members and election board members to the training.
We want to provide training that will meet their specific needs as
well. To this end, we have added an extra day to our training schedule
next year.
A significant number of our county election superintendents and
boards are now conducting elections for their municipalities. We are
also adding training next year for municipal elections. Secretary of State Karen Handel has
agreed to grant hours for municipal training at our conference for
preapproved courses. We intend to provide 12 hours of training for our
municipal superintendents each year at our conference.
All of this means that our conference next year may appear considerably
different from our conferences of the last few years. I hope you will
bear with us as we adapt to the changes in our Association. If we try
something and it doesn't work well, we will change it.
If you have thoughts about how we can improve our training or any other
aspect of our Association, please let us know. The forums are available
just for this kind of thing.
Respectfully,
Ken Van Horn
President
GEOA
